alternatives to eggcrate?

Alright, I've been all over this city and noone has eggcrate. I've gone to at least ten hardware stores, pet stores, fs - everyone knows what it is, but none carry it. Home Depot (HD in Manhattan is very different than the others I've been to) didn't have it either.
I just want it to put under my live sand and rocks so that if some rocks should fall the impact wouldn't be as damaging to the tank.
I was thinking of using the bottom of a grocery cart (the plastic ones that you carry) but that would be a pain in the butt to cut and would need one hell of a cleaning, so I don't know how good of an idea that would be. I also saw some sink racks that would serve the purpose of deflecting the impact, but they were metal so that is out. Would stainless steel be alright?

There's a plastics place down on Canal Street. I think it's called Canal Plastics... Try to do a search for that. Also, on-line is an option.

You could also call an electrical suppy distributor. Its made for lights in ceiling grids.

actually, one of the stores I went to today suggested that place. I was going to give them a call tomorrow. Have you bought from them before?

if you call a sheet metal shop they will have it or tell you where you can get it it is used in ceiling return air systems.

Every hardware store I've been to has it. Every hardware store employee either didn't know what it is or where to find it. It is NEVER in the lighting section, even though it is a light defuser. I always find it in the back, in between lumber and storm doors. I think this is why noone in the stores know where it is.

i see, dont really see how its going to help anything if your using substrate, that should absorb any impact...
