2 plus weeks ago 34 g.nano split apart at 4 am. bad bad scene. removed l/r and tank inhabs. kept wet and went to lfs got 90 g. i should have in the first place, but i am new to this, so went with plug and go first. filled new tank with everthing saved,40 lbs l/r 40 lbs l/s and all fish and polyp colonies and a few lps. Added bacteria and 40 lbs of l/s. and new H2o. All in an attempt to save livestock since no other tank was available. Once water cleared added 40 more lbs of high quality [very clean porous lightweight fiji] for what i hope is more filtration. i am monitoring all water factors daily and only see nitrites at .15 mg/L all else i test for is in good range. I need some advice, please tell me what else i can do to help these guys make it. thanks.

Nitrite is better than ammonia. Keep testing and performing water changes to get the nitrites down and to keep ammonia from spiking.

Thank you for your advice. I have only tested for nitrite thought that would indicate ammonia problem no huh?

Nitrite is the result of an ammonia spike. When nitrite is present you can assume that ammonia is at least beginning to fall. It may be difficult to tell now but I assumed you only showed nitrite and ammonia was at zero. Ammonia can be bad bad depending on how high it spiked. Again it's difficult to tell but you should test it and have make up water ready.

thanks for your info earlybird! what makes this hard for me to figure out is will this tank cycle like normal or will the start up with old rock and sand and bacteria additive cause different nitrification cycle,ie. shorter and less spike and less algae blooms?
