I hope I'm not violating any forum rules by praising a new store I found but I've had such an amazing experience at this one shop LA I feel I need to get the word out.
So I thought I've been to all the shops in my local area until some random youtube video poped up about a shop in Santa Monica that I never heard of... the video showed some sweet looking corals so I thought I'd go find it the next time I got the chance to leave work early.
Holey moley was I blown away. There were corals I've never seen before at this place and the owner is probably one of the most passionate reefers I ever met. I could tell right away that he was really into the hobby and that coral was mean't more to him than just a way to make money. I must've talked with him for a good 30 minutes about all kinds of things relating to the hobby before I even started actually shopping lol!
Anyway, I spotted some dendro coral and his answer to my question "how much for them?" question blew me away. You see, the 1st dendros I laid eyes was was from an LFS that is actually within walking distance from this guy's shop, the price they were asking was over $1000 for 6 headed pieces. So ever since then I just assumed dendros are some kind of crazy exotic coral I will never own unless I won the lottery or something. Anyway, this guy told me his dendros are $20 per head!!! Thanks I'll take $60 worth to start me off with dendros please!
Although I didn't get any dendros over the weekend I now know where to go when I want 'em!
But I did get a couple of nice pieces:
A Christmas Favia and a Candy Cane frag. I've been looking for a good size Christmas Favia for a few months now all the ones I've found were either too small for my liking or too expensive. The one at this guy's shop was twice the size of the largest one I've spotted at another LFS but was $30 cheaper. This particular piece also had 3 baby Kenya Trees attached to it and the guy said they were $20 each. When I told him I just wanted the Favia, he removed 2 of the Kenya Trees and said I can keep 1 for free! Really??? A free coral??? Who does that?!?!
My wife fell in love with the Candy Canes... and they were only $5 per head, so she picked out a nice 5 headed piece. Oh which reminds me, another cool thing this guy does is he custom frags and bases the pieces right in front of you. You tell him which angle you want to try to have your coral face in the tank and he cuts it and bases it accordingly.
Anyway, here's my corals I got from this place over the weekend. The pics were taken a few hourss after being accilmated, and they've since opened up much more.
The Favia.
Bonus Kenya Tree!
Candy Cane.
