American Culture? aka Who Am I?

Lately I've been having some identity issues. I was born in America and I have a European racial background. I don't identify w/my European roots at all, and consider myself to be wholly American, but I'm not sure what that means. I've been struggling w/these questions:
What does it mean to be an America?
Is there such thing as a distinct American Culture? What is it? Or are we just a huge melting pot of all the world's cultures and don't have anything to claim as our own?
When I try to think of things that are distinctly American I get kind of depressed. Does being American mean eating hot dogs, drinking to get drunk (my spanish teacher tells me this is distinctly American--she's from Spain), being a workaholic, eating larger portions, and having issues concerning our body image. There must be more to our culture, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. Help me out guys, I love this country (most of the time) but I'm not sure why.
I will share one story my german scuba diving guide told me about why he chooses to live in America. He said, if you watch an American family out waterskiing and it is their child's first time this is what will happen. The boat will start and "Jonny" will stand up on his water skis and then fall down in about 2 seconds. His parents will say something like "Good job Johnny! Try it again, you'll get the hang of it" Generally positive reinforcement. He said in Germany if the same situation happened the parents would say to Johnny "I knew you couldn't do it, what should I have expected?" something generally negative in nature. This is obviously just one story, but looking back on my childhood experience I would say it rings true for most people I know including myself.

Yeah, I was thinking sports, but a lot of countries are into sports, maybe we are more, I don't know I don't follow them very much. I could add a willingness to sue people also, but I guess I'm trying to find some positive things that can be ascribed to American culture...Anyone? Are we really as dispicable as other countries try to make us? The above list suggests yes, but I don't want to believe it. It makes me sad that when I go on vacation and people ask where I'm from I have to say Alaska because many don't realize that Alaska is part of the U.S.

Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie.
The freedom to do what you want, and be who you are, and go where you want.
Like the other thread--ideally we are ALL EQUAL

sports: baseball, football, and basketball are all American sports.
music: blues and jazz are American music forms. and the best rock music (at least since the late 70s) is American.
entertainment: the best movies are American movies.
women: American women are hotter.
and yes, America is more diverse than any other country, so you can get the best (and worst, I guess) of all worlds.

I think ideally is the key word. We don't want to give gay people the right to marry or even the same benefits as a straight married couple. That's chaning but it still a sticky subject. To name one obvious example. I've been to a many other countries where I would be just as "fee to do what I want" as I am here: Canada and England to name the obvious.

This is something that I will positively attribute to America. This is a good one.

It's easy to think American women=tall, blue eyed, blonde women.
But really American women come in all shapes and sizes so unless it's the American attitude you're thinking of that makes them hot. Then you probably have to specify which women. Of course, I'm an American woman, so I don't mind you saying! But alas, that doens't make it true :(

the original? I haven't seen a model of the missing link between human and neanderthal, but I'd have a hard time believing that the missing link female is better than the American female.

people from everywhere on earth come in different shapes and sizes. I'm talking about taken as a whole. I would take the sexiest American female over any other female in the world, and taken as a whole, I'd take American females over any other group.
