Cycling tank with raw shrimp and LR. Just put them in 2 days ago and my ammonia is 0.50, should i take the shrimp out to allow the ammonia to go down and turn to nitrites, or wait till it ammonia goes higher?

I'm also interested in this answer - today my Ammonia was about 3.0, NirtAtes 20ppm, and NitrItes 3.0 ppm (nitrItes are rising, that is good correct?)
Salinity is 1.022 (trying to bring it up)
One Alk test says low, other says like 300 Kh ppm - most people give lower numbers like (10) - is the test I'm using just measuring it differently?
Oh yeah, pH at 8.0 or 8.1

Doesnt matter your cycling with LR. It will all come back. Was the rock cured or uncured when you bought it?

You had LR in the tank with die off that was creating ammonia. You didnt need to put the shrimp in there at all. And yes, leaving the shrimp in the tank alowing the ammonia to continue to rise will kill off things you want to save. Remove the shrimp! Allow the stuff on the LR that is going to die anyway to die off. Save what life you can. Keep your water at a decent level. When curing LR I do a 50% water change when my ammonia goes over 1.

OK - not trying to take over the thread, but another question...
I got live rock from my local FS - It has a LOT of green, brown, and even some (not as much) white growth on it... I read a post that said that isn't good - The rock is supposed to be "cured" but there isn't coralline (the purple algae) on the rocks that he has setup in his tank even -- is this a problem? I really thought buying locally to decrease die-off would be a good thing - but, maybe not...

if u are just cycleing the tank with nothing in it just put the rock in and let it cycle, if u do have livestock make sure u cure it before u put it in the tank that will give u a ammonia spike.

Its best to run filters and skimmers and do water changes to try and keep ammonia below 1.0 so you dont kill of all the benifical hitchickers unless you want to kill them off. Once it starts to drop, you should still continue to feed the tank so the the bactiria does not die also.
