Ammonia overload2

Thanx for your advice. I have a fish only tank, jus so you know. All my fish are accounted for and seem fine. I only feed 2x per day and clean out bottom of tank 2x per week. It has been a week since i added ammonlock2(added one dose last fri, sat and sun) and it is still testing high!!?? The other tests out of my test kit are normal. PH,nitrites, salt, etc.. but I will try buying a new kit and see if it reads differently. Also, I bought a new filter and added biozyme, but the ammonia was already high before I switched them. It is a whisper 30-60 biological and I have a 55 gallon fish only tank, do you think the filter is sufficent enough?? also would switching the filters cause the ammonia to stay in until the new filter is established?? Don't know what else to try, except new test kit.

Ammonia will still show up on a test kit when you use ammolock. It may depend on the test kit though. Water changes are a better way to reduce your ammonia until your biofilter kicks in. Ammolock is suppose to render the ammonia "safe" in your tank, but that ammonia is going to turn into toxic nitrites once your biofilter starts going. I don't have experience with the particular power filter you are using, the best I can do is to tell you to keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrite levels (after you are sure the biofilter is working) and if you can't get those levels to remain at zero, you need to get a different filter. A protein skimmer will go a long way in helping with the load that your filter has to deal with. In the meantime, the best advise I can give is 10-15% water changes to keep your levels low and feed sparingly.
