Ammonia question

What sort of Ammonia level/"spike" should I be looking for during the initial cycle of my new system? That is, how high should it be to ensure good enough nitrification? Thanks a lot

Depends...what kind of live rock did you use? If it was cured, then little to no ammonia may be seen. I always say when in doubt...Ghost Feed. That is pretend like there are fish in your tank and feed the water. If you get a spike, then be glad you didn't add fish, if after a week everything is still 0, then you can add fish knowing that all will be okay.

Thanks for the reply. The rock was cured. Ammonia looks like it's at .25 after 3 days. Should I move to the "ghost feed"/shrimp in bag technique to drive the levels up?

imo .25 in three days leave it be. See if it goes higher. My cycle did not do much in 3 days. If you have dieoff it will not turn to amonia instantly in a few days you dont see more ghost feed. But 0.25 is actually good imo you are on you way. Just when you add fish do it slow and you are good to go. Because if you go to high you kill the stuff on the rock and you dont want that. Then amonia gose up again and you wait for your cycle to finish to the point you can add stuff longer.

yes I did not say that. At the end of my post I said wait for the cycle to finish to add stuff ie stuff is cuc and fish. Thanks for clearing that up this could have gone south real quick

That would be in a 20 gal tank right. I think any bigger would be to big for a lion. Execlent stock list for a 20 though lol no just kidding.

No no no scrape the damsils. Just put in 2 lions sit back and watch. Survivel of the fittest right is that not what nature intended lol

If your ammonia is at .25 then wait it out. When the ammonia reaches zero then begin to ghost feed the tank. Don't add a lot of food, just enough to make it spike again. When you do begin to stock, add only one hardy fish first.

It's best to add a cuc first then a first fish. I recommend planning a stocklist now and we can tell you if it's going to work or not. Then you'll know all the fish that you're going to get and you can plan out how and when to add them. That way you will minimize risks.

I tend to disagree with adding the cleanup crew first. A few inverts is fine, but not a full clean up crew. There is nothing for them to eat yet.

Good Point Sep. I would still start with a few inverts, getting some that consume diatoms would be smart because if you don't clean that up, you can get cyano.
