I have a 44 gallon long tank that is 16 week old with live rock and salt at 1.023
I started with a goby and a clown fish. I could not get the ammonia to drop from 2 ppm
I lost the clown fish then went to the fish store and they gave me some bacteria. Problem solved
till I did a water change and ammonia spiked to 4 ppm.
Tested the tap water, ammonia was 1ppm
tested the change out salt water after sitting a few days ammonia was +4ppm
I can not do water changes without sending the ammonia over the 4ppm level
Not sure why I am have this problem in the salt water tank but not my 3 tropical water tanks
How do I do water changes in the salt water tank without adding ammonia to the tank???

Use RO water, not tap.
You need to properly cycle your tank before adding fish. Read any of the guide to cycling threads. Wait until ammonia drops to zero before adding fish.
Best of luck and welcome to the forums. I hope you enjoy your stay.
