Amonia spikes???

How long should my amonia spikes last in my new tank??? it was at 1.0, up to 2.0 for a couple days, then today its like 4.0 what s going on or is it normal????????? todd

Can last over a week. Depends on how much bacteria you are starting out with in your tank and how cured your rock is to start with. Be patient and watch it closely. Expect your nitrite levels to raise when your ammonia starts to go down. When your nitrite and ammonia are zero, then slowly add living things (fish, cleanup crew, etc).

I had a bunch of rock in my tank that was dead and my ammonia stayed up for about a week. I also had ammonia, nitrite and nitrate all present at the same time. I had a lot of stuff deteriorating in my tank though.

Cool , that swhat i needed to hear. I have a lot deteriorating also, and lots 40 lbs of dead rock, only 10 lbs of live rock, right now, more on the way. just wanted to check.. thanx to the both of you.
