And you thought you've heard them all...

Ok, hope you're all sitting down for this one.
I was asked today by someone that 'knows what she's doing' what I was going to feed my live rock.
Okay, I know I'm new and I know that I have A LOT to learn. But I was under the impression that live rock is like a natural filter. It 'eats' by converting ammonia to nitrites then to nitrates.
Do I really need to go buy food for my live rock?
She also told me that her 'live rock grew roots' too....
...stop laughing!!!!..... :)

In an attempt to take this seriously is this a fallow tank? Meaning fishless? If so then you should provide food to the tank for the waste to turn to amonia to keep your cycle going. This might be what your friend was talking about when saying "feed your LR"

I can imagine, depending on the type of stuff growing on the rock, that it might grow "roots".
But yeah, sounds silly to me.

Anything will grow bacteria in your tank. The substrate, the powerheads, glass, etc. This will all become part of your biological filter. Live rock just adds more surface area for the bacteria to grow on.
What makes live rock "live" are the vast amounts of various critters in and on the rock. These critters are part of the food chain and clean up crew. Maybe that is what your friend was referring too?

That makes sense! It sometimes takes someone saying it just a little differently for it to click. Thank you :)
Perfect- no, hers isn't a fallow. I think it's a 55gal FOWLR. She may have some corals going on in there too.
Itom- For her fish's sake...I can only hope she has some stuff growing that looks like roots and doesn't think she can plant her rock in her garden in the spring. :)
This was not only a lesson in what to feed live rock, it was also a lesson in who to take advice from.
You guys are fabulous, thanks again :)

I'm going straight to H E double hockey sticks for poking fun at her. Now I feel bad...but I still feel worse for her fishies

LOL yeah, I see your dilemma. Isn't it so nice to tell the boss that she is wrong without actually telling her though? We will help her. Tell her that you found this nice site and she should check it out. She won't say that she knows you. She will just tell us about her tank and we will help her.
