It is quite rare for anemones to split. They only do so if incredibly healthy and on the threshold of their maximum size.
It is very difficult to diagnose an anemone as "sick" since their behavior is so erratic and unpredictable. For instance, anemones may shrink and wither for no apparent reason... many do this on a daily basis depending on the hour of the day. They tend to change color as well when shrinking, getting darker as their tissue contracts.
To top it all off, anemones like to move around. Even in pristine conditions a healthy anemone is prone to wander around from time to time.
One way to tell if an anemone is unhealthy is to judge its size over a lengthy period of time. Watch your anemone for a few months and take notes. If it it decreasing in diameter, then odds are that it is starving to death. Another telltale sign of starvation is loss of pigment. Generally speaking, a snow white anemone is one that lacks symbiotic zooxanthellae algae due to inadequate lighting, and is guaranteed to perish.
Anemones should be given supplemental biweekly feedings of finely shredded or blended seafood. However, overfeeding is just as, if not more harmful to them than underfeeding.
The only true sign of an ill anemone is disintegration, and at that point death is imminent with no amount of care being likely to revive them. Nobody said anemones were for beginners and much research is probably the best chance you have of keeping them successfully.
