Anemone question

I just ordered a carpet anemone from here and when it arrives, after acclimating, could I use rubber medical gloves to put him into the tank? Could it still sting me through those?

I don't see why you couldn't use those gloves. I have handled mine with bare hands though several times and never gotten stung.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt know that they dont always sting. I thought any time you touched one you would be stung. So it is good to know that isnt the case. I am just hoping it doesnt eat any of my favorite fish

Try to use non powdered gloves, you can even check with the local vet office and see if they have any long examination gloves available. I've used latex and nitrile gloves with no problems before.

I was told in another thread that Anemone's require lighting similar to a reef tank. Is this so? I'd like to add one to my tank, though I only have 108 watts of flourescent.

I believe the only anemones that don't require strong lighting are tube anemones, which I've read can be nasty little creatures.

There is a thread over in clownfish and anemones that you might want to read. It is titled just a warning:carpet anemones

No chance for an anemone with only 108 watts of lighting. BTA's and Condylactis are the least light ones, but they prefer more. Anything else (I suggest) should have metal halides. Especially carpets anemoens.

After my bleached out carpet anemone recovered from saving it from *****. i was cleaning my rocks off with a turkey baster and brushed my wrist against it and it burned me. I am a cook and get burned on a daily basis, this burn is different you could see each tenicle perfectly right on my wrist bone. So don't think you cant be burned

ditto, you can get stung, Ihave many times. I have a green carpet for about 2 yrs now ,the few times ihad to handle him, I touched him on the base and did not get stung, the green part is very sticky, I have been cleaning my tank and gotten stuck to him and pulled away too hard and riped the top layer of skin off, you have to be careful cause you can ripe their tenticles off this way also.

For about $14.00 you can order gloves that are latex and safe to use in your tank. They are made by corallife, I believe. These are worth the investment, I think. They can be reused. I use mine all the time., with no fear of contaminating my tank. They work like a champ when I feed my anemones.
