anenome

Ive noticed my anenome has been shriveling down to nothing with this brown stringy goo coming out of it. It did it the other day and I thought it was dead but it came back about 2 hrs later. Is this normal? Is it on its way out?

Anenomes are very delicate and difficult to maintain. What kind of lighting do you have, what do you feed it/how often, what is your water quality?

dont know the lighting..got the tank from a friend of a friend. I looked up the maker on the internet but they are out of business. Water is perfect, feed it freeze dried krill every couple of days. Also..if you happen to know. I am running a millenium 2000 filter. It has that area behind the cartdige for the bacteria I guess similar to a bio wheel. Can I clean this off every now and then? I;ve to take the bio wheel of the other types of filters.

Not sure about your anemone (unless it's only pooping), but as far as your filter, you can remove it and put it in a bowl of your tank water (saved from water change) and give it a pretty good cleaning that way. Don't put it in fresh water.

How long have you had the anemone?
What type of anemone is it?
What size is the anemone?
Is there a clown hosting in it?
Is this a reef tank?
Check your bulbs for the writing on them and tell us what it says. Is there a special large size ballast with your lights, about the size of a brick?
Any idea how old the lighting is?
You may be over feeding and fouling your water, try only once or twice a week, and soak it in a vitamin suppliment like Selcon, Zoecon or Zoe.
Also try mysis shrimp, silversides, frozen krill, perhaps the Formula 1 or 2. I'm just not a fan of anything freeze dried for an anemone.

i use frozen mysis for my 3 anenomes and i have had no problem...mine go huge and full some times they are smaller and change to a browny colour then back to white ..mine used to spit junk out when they were feeding on feeders (had to train them off feeders that store was feeding) since the frozen mysis they are all fine ...
