I have a forrest of brown colored anenomes. They seem to mulitply rapidly. I was told at my local store to use peppermint shrimp to control their population. I have purchased 5 for a 55 gallon tank, at first they charged at them but not they do not do much of anything. Can anyone suggest other options or tell me where these brown ugly things came from? They range in size, of course, but they seem to be light to medium brown in color with long tubular bases and long thin tentacles.

they are called aiptasia. they are hitchikers from live rock. look in the hitchhikers forum. the peppermints usually go after small aptasia but they tend to leave the large ones alone. there are a couple aptasia removal methods avaialble in local fish stores or online.

Thanks so much for guiding me in the right direction. I think now I will go to war with these evil beasts.

Good luck with your war. Ha! I have found that by boiling R/O water and using a turkey baster, squirt the boiling water directly at the aiptasia, then release the bulb (unsqueeze) and suck the aiptasia up into the baster and discard, move on. If you mess with them they can spew themselves all over and multiply even more rapidly  Good luck
