Angel Fish in Fish Only Tank

As long as you feed them several times a day with a varied and vitamin rich diet.
I never saw my Queen angel pick from LR. However, my flame feeds most of the time on LR.
So it also depends on the Angel type and age.

As long as the water quality is excellent, and you provide the right diet I don't think rock is a must. Wait for some of the angel experts to weigh in on this.

I think the best way to keep an angel is to have established LR with a lot of sponge growth in it's tank. Angels need sponges in their diet and I didn't really like (when I had angels) the "angel formula" food that is available. I believe not having enough sponges in their diet is what killed mine. It could have also been lack of experience seven years ago! :)
I would say put SOME LR for them to graze upon. Just my opinion.

My Coral Beauty would not have made it without LR, he didn't eat what I offered for a couple weeks, just picked at the LR....Over time I notice he now prefers what I feed him, he could probably do without LR now....My 2 big angels could seemingly do without LR alltogether. Good water is a must with Tangs and Angels IMO, also "greens" and vitamins of some sort. I make sure and feed Angel Formula twice a week (i.e. sponge) to my big angels.

Lots of good opinions above. Fresh SW greens and vitamins, like Selcon go a long way. Some angels are going to better that others; IMO, I wouldn't put a Flame or Kirk's CB in a tank without LR (or a good grazing substitute., as an example. But that's just IMO and IME. Here's a neat trick, if you find the right place to do it. Fill a 10 gal tank with used tank water, put in some safe rocks or LR rubble and put the tank in direct sunlight. I even keep a bright desk lamp on the tank 24/7. Nutrients need to be high, so a few food pellets or leftover frozen food now and then helps. No heater, filter, or even circulation. I keep the rock farm completely covered (except for a tiny space) with clean glass. An unbelievable amount of algae will grow on the rocks under these conditions and your angels will love it. Rinse the rocks well to remove accumulated gunk. I kept several angels this way before LR was even readily available; I even raised an Emperor from juvi to big adult without it. No big deal, just showing it can be done. But my last word on this subject is always that LR is best, just not always mandatory.

I have a french angel. and i rarely see him graze on my LR. it is important to feed him lots of variety and seaweed sheets from the store. i also feed him something called angel formula 1 which has sponge and is for angelfish.

French angels are omnivores that will usually eat just about anything; but should have sponge/greens to really thrive. Angel Formula I is a great food, IMO.
