Annihilate All Aiptasia

They came, they laid waste to the tank, ravaging..pillaging...and in TWO WEEKS devoured all by 5 of my dwarf seahorses

I am in the process of disassembling the 15 gallon pony tank. Curse those evil invaders of death. What does it take to obliterate them from your tank!!!
So any good attack plans?

Holy Smokes, Ryk!! I'm sorry...
I definitely concur with the previous poster as far as eradicating the menace. I would start less invasively with a peppermint shrimp or 2 and see how that works. If that doesn't show any promise, move on to the boiled water, lemon juice, on and on. I'm always thinking water quality, I guess, and the less foreign things put in is probably best.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you do and what works.

Joes Juice, boiling water in turkey baster, hungry peppermint shrimp (for them to eat aptasia feed a lot less). But i guess it is too late to tell you.

that would be one of the many reasons dwarf seahorse tanks are set up with all sterilized rock, and sand. there are many things other than just aip on liverock that can kill dwarfs, I'm suprised you didnt come accross mention of this in your research before getting the dwarfs.
I am terribly sorry for your loss.

even the sticky slime from a vermited snail can kill a dwarf if it falls accross its mouth preventing intake of water for breathing. they are definatly IMO one of the hardest kept horses out there.

I've had peppermint shrimp before and dont think I would trust them with dwarf horses. Mine would lay in wait and when something (food or not) would drift past their hideout they would come out and grab it. I dont think they would eat the horses but I see potential for stress issues.
I think RZ has a good point with just using sterile rock. I have personally had very good luck using boiling water and never had them come back.

Thanks. I don't know where the stupid little pests came from. The only thing i can figure is the LS. There is no LR in the pony tank.

Well...not so good. Only three have survived. The 2 original adults Zeus(F) and Titan(M) from Luke, and one of the babies from the second batch.
I have taken all of my live rock and boiled it. Every last piece from the 90 and the dead coral from the 15. The upstairs is starting to smell like a stagnant pond. I saved some of the macro algae from the 90, but I still wonder if i should throw that to...it most likely carries aiptasia eggs?spores?
The 3 ponies are living in a empty 10 gallon with a few dead coral to hitch to, they look anything but happy.
The 90 is now bare except for 2 sergant damsels, the fire goby Flash, and my daughter's orange molly...she gave up her fish tank for 2 toads Daddy found in our back yard. So being that mollies a brackish water fish I put him in the 90 salt. The molly loves the new space in the 90, but the tenants are not so certain about the molly. I figured it must be kinda like seeing an alien from outer space. I still have my gorgonian and the zoos and purple blade that Luke gave me.
So now I cycling the rock through sunday in tap water to kill everything off.
sigh....it'll come back eventually.
But Life is a circle...and with death comes life...so a new tank will be born again.

i would definitely not put peppermints with dwarves...there are VERY few inverts safe with this type...and all inverts or anything for that matter should be dipped in panacur treatment to cleanse it of things such as hydroids,etc....You need shrimp and things that are vegetarians only...i think like a hawaiian shrimp...but that is not on topic...just for reference

Ugh, sorry Ryk...I can't believe how horrible that's got to be for you. Any idea how the aptasia got into the tank? Sheesh...after I posted about starting with peppermints, I rethought that as well, and Luke pretty much confirmed my second thoughts. How are things today? Again, ugh...I hope things bounce back for you. Wish I could help more!!

Yes, sadly I do...
from time to time I borrowed water from my 90 gallon to use for the brine shrimp hatchery. The 90 has aiptasia

But things are getting better, much better. The 90 gallon is really shaping up. With the LR removed, and a extra internal fluval added. The water has become crystal clear once more. The LR is now DR and the upstairs smell much better. Best of all the 3 ponies left finally look like they are recovering. I can only imagine how many times they could have been stung. Poor little things. The three have been resting on their sides for the better part of the past 3 days. Titan(M) was the first one to assume upright hitching, the younger pearl colored pony was in the best shape of the 3, Zeus(F) didn't hitch vertically until this morning.
There is still much work to be done with all of the tanks, but above all, seeing the ponies getting healthier again is by far the most rewarding.

Ugh, no short cuts in this at all, are there? I'm glad to hear that things are starting to shape up a bit. Hopefully reproduction will resume under your watchful eye.

Thanks, me too. Titan looks like he might be pregnant. I wonder though with seahorses. Some species can keep their offspring dormant until the right situation/habitat becomes available. Not sure if seahorses can do this, but the males sure keep you guessing.
