another cycle question

I am going to put all base rock in my tank and cycle with a shrimp. When the tank cycles and finishes I want to add live rock that is cured already. So the question is after I add the rock how long should I wait until I add the CUC, or can I add all at the same time?

I would wait a two to three days just to make sure there is no ammonia spike from adding the cured live rock. Usually there is not, but suppose the rock is loaded with sponge. By taking it out of water to move it, you will kill some of it and create an ammonia spike. Better to be safe than sorry.

Next time I'm going to cycle the tank just with substrate and shrimp. Add base rock after the cycle and a couple chunks of full grown live rock from my other tanks...
The only thing you should care about is the bacteria on the rocks. I would rather throw dead rock in my tank and grow what I want on it, instead of getting hitchers from the LFS

Hey Joe, I do not know yet, I am on the fence. I may order from here, and cure it for a week, but I have seen some nice pieces at my LFS that is already cured.... so not sure yet. notsonoob, i have thought about not adding any live rock at all also, because you can get some unwanted pests, but you can also get some pretty cool hitchers also. I want to get some coraline algae and other nice stuff going also.

Well first this is what I do when I get live rock for my LFS. I bring a 5gallon bucket filled with about two gallons of my tank water. I have the fish store put the live rock I want right in my bucket and I am good to go. When I get home if I do not want to take a chance on hitchhikers I put one piece at a time in a smaller pail with Povidone iodine 10% solution I get at CVS a lot cheaper then lugos solution and basically the same thing. That should take care of the hitchhikes or at least get them to leave the rock giving you a look at what you have. Also remember if you want coralline algae you have to add a piece of rock with it already growing. It will not grow on the rocks in your tank with out some already introduced

Thanks for the info my friend, I will keep that in mind, now I just need to figure out who I want it from, seems a little cheaper per pound through here. But they had some nice pieces at the LFS so decisions, decisions...Oh well I will have to see what they have once all of the initial set up process is over.
