Thats strange. Is he in the filter current maybe? (Had to ask) Without seeing it progress into a more constant behavior I dont want to speculate. Try posting in the disease forum.

When my lion is going after food, he kind of goes in a trance, watching it fall before he strikes at it. He goes straight up and down sometimes. Do you think this is a similar situation? How long have you had this lion? What size is it?

Ive seen lions swim, sideways, upside down, backwards, the works really - to get at food. If the lion is crusiin the tank and continues to swim sideways, unable to right himself thats a problem, if he swim sideways for a sec or two then right himself, that just being a lionfish.
