Another question about PH

The Ph in our 55 gal tank sits about 8.0 to 8.1. I didnt wanna use something like ph up cause i didnt want it to interfear with the cycle or anything like that. The local saltwater store recommend we put some coral in there, to naturally help raise the ph, but its been a month and it hasn't done anything, ph still sits the same, even when we do a water change. Any suggestions ?? Thanks

lol, ok got that now. We were going through *****, which i found to be ok, but not great for salts. LOL we live in a very small town, and have found a two great stores, one that deals in fish only, and they have mostly salts. Thats where we found out about LR, LS, better skimmer, ect. My mistake is that i didnt do alot of research on saltwater tanks, i didnt think it would be that hard, and were learning a very valueable lesson with all of this. But we pretty much got our basic replaced now, we just dont have as much LR as we will need. Its a 55 gal tank, with aprox 60 lbs of LS to cover the bottom, and we only got about 15 or so lbs of RL right now. We were just battleing ich for the second time, and I used greenex recommend by the other fish store, but it killed my cleaner shrimp, and well the flame angel isn't in there today. My husband takes them out when they die before i wake up. LOL. Well thanks again.

I'm not familiar with greenex but I would caution you with using any mediations in your display. With a quick search I found this statement
"I purchased this product in 8/01 to cure marine ich on my purple tang. The manufacturer states that this product is invertebrate- and coral-safe, and will not harm the biological filter, when used as directed. I used the product as directed. The next day, my longnose hawkfish was dead, two other fish were acting "twitchy", and a red-legged hermit had died. My mushrooms were also curling up at the edges. Prompt addition of a container of activated carbon probably saved my tank from complete devastation. I do NOT recommend this product for control of ich in a reef tank."
Don't get me wrong... I now nothing about the product but caution should be taken with any medication.
Glad they recommended LR and LS. Maybe I was a little harsh on finding a new LFS...
and BTW, WELCOME to SWF.COM

Thanks for the welcome ... and not harsh on the LFS ... we learned that lesson too. LOL Ok, one more question here. What is the purpose of an RO unit, I mean i read about them, but we treat the water with aquasafe, and have a good skimmer for our size tank, so would a RO unit still be recommend?? I've never heard of it tell comming to the board.

A RO/DI unit is a good addition IMO. It removes 99.9% of the chemicals present in tap water... leaving only H2O. A good water quality is very important in the world of salt water.
You can test your local water or find a report from your local water company to see what your tap water contains. I think you would be surprised to see what your actually drinking!!
Being in a small town your water company may not be on here but you can look... Local Water Reports.

Hey Dark Angel. I started the same way you did not knowing much but thanks to this site I know alittle more than when I started. One thing I did learn was you sould get a QT a put your fish in their when you are treating for ich or any other disease. Getting a QT started doesn't cost much plus it makes less headache for your regular tank.

Thanks for that link, our city is listed, but there is no report online for it. I do know that we have a fairly new water treatment system here. Its been in place for about 4-5 years now. And there is floride in the city water, but other than that, i have no clue about the water here. I can say, the water the comes from our station here is one of the best tasteing waters in the surrounding 5 counties. Not that that means anything for quality for the fish. but .. LOL Thanks again

The town I live in doesn't have a report on there either. I called them and asked if I could stop by and pick up a copy. I got some weird looks as I explained to them in the office I needed the report for my fish tank
