I'm curious, when did they first really start touring and making it big as a band?

Id say the early 70's when they started really getting the attention of people outside of San Francisco and surrounding areas. They put out a few albums and did touring across the country and even went to Europe in 72' I believe.

Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, and Tom Constanten formed the Warlocks in 1965. They became the Grateful Dead in 1968 or thereabouts. They were pretty well known in the Northeast (mainly because of Bill Graham) in the late sixties. 1970 was a pretty big year for the Dead. 1972 was when they made their first trip to Europe and became a global phenomenon. 1977 is considered by many to be their best year; they were at one of their creative peaks. You can still find some stellar shows from 1980, 1985, 1987, and the spring of 1990 too. The Grateful Dead ended when Jerry died in the Summer of '95, but IMO they should've called quits after Brent Mydland's death in the summer of '90. JMO.

Thank you very much! That was most appreciated :)

Also in case your curios, the dead fans got the deadhead moniker when the band started there own fan club. I think it was inside the working man's dead albumn. The put a little thing in there ....Calling all deadheads mail us your adress blah blah blah for show and band info...or something like that. I guess the response was huge, and it just snowballed.
Anybody going to see the dead this summer. I'm wondering how that will turn out. I went and saw phil&friends at the warfield. It was cool because trey, and warren haynes were playing with him, but it was'nt the dead
