Hi Topher,
I too am pretty new here posted a few times and done alot or research. I have a 29G biocube, and love it. From what i have read and what I have done, any invert's are pretty much fine to put in there. Obviously nothing monsterous, but they dont equate to the same as a fish on your bio load when you add them, and they are a nice addition to the tank. As far as putting in something "different" I have seen a ton of different things that people have put into their tanks. Its a matter of what you consider different than someones elses. My first fish was a Royal Gramma she is brilliantly colored and has quite a personality. I also have 2 clowns and in another month or 2 plan on a pygmy angel (maybe). That will complete my fish load for this tank. But I was tossing the idea of a 6 line Wrasse, or a purple dart fish. They have tons of color and dont get enormous. I dont know for a 12 gal tank I think your fish limit before its considered overstocked is 2 and that also depends on what type and their max size. I am also looking at an Orange Lined Cardinal fish, and one of my favorite of all time is the Catalina Goby. Although I love them all I have to choose only one of them and thats all.
GOOD LUCK and post pics when you get them.

Sorry but, you can not successfully keep a Catalina Goby in your tank unless you want to risk it dying. If you don't want it dying you would need a chiller and also you would need to get rid of all your current livestock or risk them dying too. Also if you do get a chiller and do what I said you could only keep coldwater species.

I just got a 12 gallon nano too and I was going to get a Nemateleotris magnifica (firefish) or Decora (purple firefish). I also was going to get an amphiprion ocelaris (False percula clownfish) or Percula (True percula clownfish). Those what I were planning on getting for my 12 gallon nano. So I thought you might be interested.

I would like one for mine but they eat microfauna and and should be kept in a tank of 75 gallons or more. If you do happen to find one eating processed or frozen foods I would definetly get it. Make sure that they feed them in front of you. Don't take there word for it. Also you may want to ask nYgel on SWF. He has a mandarin and a scooter blenny. His thread is below. You may want to ask him some questions.

i accidentaly bought a sick one and it died, dragging all my other fish with it. but ive heard they are great fish and i am willing to try another one. i would say that if you want to get this fish, or any fish for that matter, see if your lfs will hold them for a week or so for observation. if they live past a week with no signs of sickness, then take him home and enjoy

Well if you get a Sixline you may not want to get a Scooter Blenny even if it is eating frozen food because I heard that Sixline's also eat microfauna but not only microfauna. My point is they would be competing for the same food source and the Scooter might die. Also sixlines can be terrorize other tank mates or they can be very peaceful. So if you get a peaceful one you can keep them with just about everthing reef safe I think. By the way I think if you put a piece of PVC and maby burry it you will probably get alot of pods.
