my lfs has a little puffer about the size of a quater which i think is a dogface. its all black and looks like it maybe has some lines going around it like a mappas. I have a 90 gal right now but deffinatley upgrading in the near future. are these difficult to care for? how big do they get and how fast do they grow? does this sound like its a dogface? do u think it still has a chance being this small? thanks for the help and sorry for all the questions. just wanna see if i should pick up this little guy tmrw

You mean one like this?

It's the season. That pic is from August 20, 2007. IIRC, they were Mappa's. I wouldn't be surprised to see him grow well over 6"-7" the first year, at which point, the load he'll put an a 90gal is very substantial.

Exactly it. Was labeled dogface but looked more like a mappa to me but I know very little about different species. So what is it mappa? Do they stay that color? Good buy at 25$

A 7" show one in a search came up for $649.
Not a huge puffer fan -- I think they're cool but the limits it puts on me for tank mates make them one of the fish I've never learned about.

It is a good buy at $25. But the cost of the fish itself will be minimal. Mappa's grow to be the 3rd largest saltwater puffer. Only the Stellatus (Starry) puffer and Diodon Hystrix grow larger. They are shy when younger, but once they put on some size, reach and get well over a foot, on their way to 2 feet or so in max length. They become increasingly mean. The problem is they have probably the most damaging bite in aquaria. Worse then the sharks and triggers. A large trigger might take flesh off, but a large puffer will take your finger clean off.
If you're not planning on setting up a large tank (180gal+) in the future, within a year, I would say pass. The LFS I took the pic in, would not sell them. For coloration, they don't stay all black, but keep that molten pattern through their lives. Some have more yellow/golden then white. SWF had one in the EI&BI section about a year ago;

Hmm I'm very tempted to get it. Deffinatley plan on upgrading in the future, before a year is up. Mappas are probably my favorite puffer and I finally have a chance at one that won't set me back 500 bucks lol. Hearing how big he gets I might sell him back after a year just so he dosent destroy the rest of his tankmates. Still a toss up because I'm not too sure how healthy it is? Is the mappa in the video behaving normally? The one I saw was kinds just chilling at the bottom and hovering around, this normal behavior?
I'm not looking to get this fish and keep it for a year then turn around and sell it for a profit but my lfs will most likely not take it back now that I think about it. If my lfs is unable to take it do you know of another way to maybe sell it if it gets out of hand and comes to that down the road? Again I'm not trying to think of a way to sell this for a profit but I just don't want to be stuck with this and not have my lfs be able to take it back.
Thanks!

The Map Puffer, also known as the Scribbled Toadfish and Scribbled Arothron Puffer, has a very distinct and vivid appearance. The main color ranges from light tans to dark yellows and it has a network of black "scribbles" covering the body, forming an intricate pattern. It lacks pelvic fins, but has learned to use the pectoral fins to move about the aquarium.
It has the ability to inflate its body to almost twice its normal size when threatened or alarmed. While "puffed up," its spines are held straight out from the body to discourage others from trying to eat it. Parts of the flesh are poisonous if digested. Its teeth are actually a fused beak-like structure.
A 180 gallon or larger, fish-only aquarium with a good protein skimmer is suitable. It will generally live peacefully with other fish, even other Puffers. It will eat invertebrates found in a reef tank, as well as corals, and even aquarium apparatus. It becomes alarmed when in a net, therefore, use a container to transfer it.
The Map Puffer needs a varied diet of meaty foods including squid, krill, clams, and hard shelled shrimp to help wear down their ever growing teeth. It hunts at night, so it may only be seen during the nocturnal hours.

I decided to go for it. The lfs buys them back so on the off chance that it is a mappa I have somewhere to give it to when it gets too big. He agreed with me that it wasnt a dogface but he dosent know if its a mappa or not. The little guy was 25 bucks and has been there for 2 weeks and i saw him eat some mysis, hes just a little stressed at the oment and is acclimating.
Its just going to be him and my free clownfish in the 90 untill I can figure out its temperment and what it is exactly. kinda cute for a puffer haha

Pics up in a little!

Are you sure it's not the other way around? The juevinile star on this website looks nothing like the one I have?

Oh so you got it it from pets warehouse, yup you have a baby star.I bought mine from them about 6 months or so ago from them.He was a lil smaller and darker then the ones they have now,but as they get more comfortable with their surroundings and get a lil bigger they get lighter in color. As for what saltwaterfish.com shows it all depends on where they are collected.

Nice looking lil puff,ya i kind of regret buying my star puffer because they really don't belong in the home aquarium. They grow huge, regretfully a 300 gal will be kind of cramped for an adult.I go to pets warehouse Andy is a pretty knowledgable guy there,if he doesn't know something he'll straight out tell you instead of making up something.I also go to south shore tropicals in lindenhurst on park ave just off of montauk hwy.I've known those guys since i could walk, lol. The last place I go to is country critters in medford on route 112 south of sunrise hwy.
P.S 25 bucks is a good price for a dog face puffer, that's a steal for a star or map puffer.
