Any reason why a Generator can't be used to power tank?

Is there any reason why a tank cannot be soley run off of a power generator? With the possibility of power outages etc. Is this not a safer alternative, with the con being that you would have to refill the generator tank every 5-6 hours?
Maybe a combination of Active current at specific times and Generator power at other times. What do you guys think is this even a possibility?
Is there a way to rigg the generator to supplement active current so that when we loose power the generator automatically comes on? Just wondering I have read about so many outages I was curious.

thanks for your info I was just wondering with the number of power outage post I have seen I was curious of the procedure for doing this and if it was even possible.
Yeah I know about the gas thing it is exspensive but there are some generators that have gas mixed with oil that seem to be inexspensive. Might not be a bad investment in case the worst happens. BUt thanks anyway.

i have a 10,000 watt generator and apc battery backup so when the power go's out i have apx 180 min to start the generator and plug it all in. the cost would be too high to run it all the time take a look at home depot they have the auto switchs for generators and big (25,000 watts)generators
the smaller ones are loud
