any suggestions on type of refractomter or hydrometer?

I agree. I wasted money on two hydrometers before I got a refractometer. I got mine from North Coast Marine, check out their 'specials' page. It is a great little tool, at a great price. I believe they sell the exact same one on ---- auctions as well. This is a popular model, so I know its not a cheapo, etc. You won't regret it.

check ----, i just got mines for 40.99 but after taxes and shipping and junk = 51.99, i cant wait until i get mines. I wasted 20 bucks already on hydrometers.

However, you are right...... GET a REFRACTOMETER. In most places these instruments are selling for over $100. However, if you use your brouser, a quick search will lead you to places where one can be found for $70 or less. Well worth the money!
Never use swing arm hydrometers. Never.
