So I said it on the other thread because..some tap water is well water which contains all sorts of trace elements- many that will not help your inverts to thrive. Treated town water is often chlorinated. This can be neutralized by adding chemicals but really it is just better to use filtered water, preferably RO water and save yourself all the many possibilities of tap. High nitrates., large diatom blooms........I could go on but won't. I learned the hard way. You can start using RO water for all your water changes. You will need to do a big one after your cycle and need fresh water top offs along the way so seriously do not worry. I am sorry for freaking you out. :joy:

Many options out there for obtaining RO water. You can buy an RO unit (a good one) and do it yourslef if you have a large tank this can be a good way to go. Otherwise many LFS will sell it by the gallon- you bring in your own containers. You probably have some water filling stations where you live. This is often RO but if not it is OK to use as long as there is no chlorine in the water. Some use UV sterilization. Walmart also sells RO water. Read the fine print on the jugs, but spring or drinking- whatever the label it will be fine.
You will use fresh water for your daily to weekly topp offs depending on your tank and environment. This will keep your specific gravity steady when waterevaporates out of your tank. Then when you do your regular water changes you will use pre-mixed salt water - the same specific gravity as that already in your tank. If you only added salt water to your tank your salinity would go through the roof.
What are you setting up?? :happyfish

go on the famous auction site and search ro/di and you can read up on how it works. I know you need to have a location for the gallons of waste water that will come out in addition to the good water.
I am thinking of getting one and hooking up by my washing machine so I can at least use the waste water for something. I am not sure how it works but I will research alittle too.
good luck

What would you use the waste water for????
Good grief? I'd hate to think of saltwater going into my washer or worse... my plants. :notsure:

The waste water wouldn't be salt. When pumping water to be filtered through an Ro/DI unit only a percentage of water is filtered through and considered "pure", the rest is considered waste water. Which is what most of us drink and wash our clothes with in the first place. :joy:

I'm on a well because I live in the country. Believe me when I say this.... even with a water purifier which my hsuband and daughter swar is perfectly fine - this woman drinks ONLY bottled water.
That is, if I'm drinking water.
I'll use the purified water for ice tea, but not for coffee. My husband thinks I'm nuts... the sad part is I'm beginning to think so too. hahaha!
