I posted before about my lights catching on fire, well, at least the cord did. It all started with the one MH bulb went out, so I went and bought a new bulb, but it still di dnot work. Then, we smelled melting plastic, and saw that the cord was kinda melting. I had to keep turning them on, only when I was able to watch them, since the corals needed them, and the cord caught fire one day. Now, all my corals are dead, and I have been without MH lights for over 3 months, and now, tonight, the one florecent (spelling, sorry) light just went off. I am worried about my tank, and I can't life the lights up off the tank, and my husband is no help. So, if there is anyone around the Reading area that would like to help, I would pay you to help me fix the lights.

If it is a cheapo set up, then you might just break it down and sell its parts as a retro pieces in the classifieds and use the money to go towards a new light.
If it is a nicer light, then its worth the effort.
You have a good camera? I am sure we can figure out what happened that initially caused the problem. Can you list the brand and model number.
Somewhere, someplace there is bound to be a good reference diagram of where the problem is/could be with your fixture.
Then with pics and some poking around I am sure you can fix it yourself.
Just a thought.

Or if it isnt a huge fixture, then perhaps shipping it to another member to do for you would be better.
No NOT me, but there are tons of good folks on here that we all know with the exp to troubleshoot a fixture.

if it's just the cord ... cut it and splice on a new one... keep the colors the same and waalaa. should work.

basics .. green (ground), white (neutral) black (main power)
could be that the inside wires were not (thick enough) rated properly (the right guage)

I had one burn up on me. I had taken off my return pipes to clean them and the switch on the power strip controlling the pump got turned back on. Water shot directly up into my canopy. It wound up burning my end caps which I later replaced. Any pics? It'd be a lot easier to tell from close ups.
