Anyone do any hardcore weight training out there?

I have a real simple question. If I am losing a lot of weight with a low calorie, high impact weight training regiment, do i still need NEW protein to build muscle, or can I use the flab I'm trying to get rid of as a fuel to make that new muscle?

I am by no means an expert or anything close on this. But I do work out and I am working hard at getting into better shape.
I would think that you need the protein, but I don't think that you need to supplement. Is that what you mean?? I would however make sure that my low cal diet included lots of lean protein.
Now, if you are looking to build bulk, the protein shakes work well for that. Either way, good on you for making the effort to work out hard and diet!!!!!

Yeah, I workout with a friend, who is 19 and probably weighs 150 lbs. So he started a protein supplement and it just is slightly annoying because of course in two months he is making this visible gains and I'm not. Of course I'm losing a bunch of weight and he is just putting on muscle like crazy. I think after another 30lbs of weight lost I'll revisit this and see where I am! Thanks for the advice!

You need a steady source of protein if you want to build muscle mass while working out to lose weight. Keep in mind also that muscle weighs more than fat so you may see that you start losing weight more slowly but are putting on muscle mass.

I am into extreme weightlifting.... Every time I stand up Nyuck nyuck nyuck,
My knowledge comes from the point of loosing weight rather than weigh training but you want a good vitamin and mineral supplement. I am a lot better at knowing how to do it than actually doing it but you should look at what you are eating as a long term lifestyle change. Going higher protein and lower carb long term is a good thing but unless you plan on making this workout a part of your lifestyle permanently I would use a supplement of some sort while you are working out. Then once you get into a "Normal" routine you wont have to worry about putting weight back on because your calorie intake is too high without the extreme workouts. If you are using a gym talk to a trainer and see what they suggest.

back in the day ..many days ago.i was crazy into bodybuilding i am 5 foot ten.at my peak i was 225 lbs at 8% body fat and held an ace certification in personal training.so i do have some credentials.and yes you need protein.protein is the only source of food for muscles period.low carbs is the key.carbs is the train that brings protein to muscles.you will never get good muscle tone by starving them with no protein.i would suggest some chicken out of the oven daily .dragonzim is correct muscle weighs about 5 times more than fat.so you cannot always go by the scale.good luck 30 lbs is a great accomplishment congrats
