I built my own stand...it is awesome. I used box tubing to create the frame and then built a "cover" to put around it...you can see the box frame in my post in the reef section about my new 125. There are pictures of the frame. The box tubing cost about 200-250 and then I did all the welding and cutting myself. The frame could support an expedtion....or about 2300 lbs as is all my stuff on the stand...oh yeah and the stand itself weighs about 50 lbs total...I can have one cutom built for you like it if you are interested.

I've built my own stands (3) with canopies. They aren't has hard as they seem. As long as you've some basic carpentary skills you can do it. I can help you out with advice if you need it.

Can't see how building ones own stand or using another ocpanies stand is gonna void any warranty. Thats what the Moss-Magnuson bill takes care of. If it was not for the mess of having a flood I would love to see what a tank company would say about it....when they found out it was a home made stand under it.
Depending on the tank size kitchen or bath cabinets (wall or base) can be made into very nice functional stands and they can usually be acquired for a lot less and of better construction than the stands these aquarium companies offer. A good quality cabinet made with real 7 ply plywood and rabbeted / glued joints is strong. Al it takes is a piece of plywood or laminated counter top etc on it. Works fine. All any stand really is, is a box of proper dimensions to fit the tank, usually framed with 2 x 4"s and covered n plywood or paneling. Pretty basic carpentry skills like dadszx7 stated.

Wrong, building your own stand that may not be structurally sound to support the manufacturers tank of may be off level creating undue stress on a corner which could cause seem stress, cracks or leaks is certainly a concern of the manufacturer. I can easily agree they should void their warranty because of it...same idea where if you drop a cell phone in water the warranty is void...they shouldn't have to replace the dead unit because you dropped it in water...thats why they have those little water indicators on them. So its along the same principal...now If you could build a stand and prove that it is structuraly sound in comparison or whatever...perhaps....but I am not sure how you would prove it.

Sorry Stimpy. There is no way that they can force yu to buy the stands they manufacture just to get a warranty on the tanks they sell. Just not gonna happen. They may not come right out and tellyou they are blowing smoke as evidently there is enough that seemto buy nto their bull, but if yu have a stand that is made by XYZ company and its planar, (flat to those that don't know what planar is) and its sturcturally sound, they tank company ABC can not refuse the warranty. They may rant a nd rave and threaten but they will loose in a court case if that wsa whata came of it. Its nothing like dropping a cell phon in water..duh! It fallunder the same crap as when the big three auto makers started to deny folks warranty on autos because they used a Fram oil filter (aftermarket) on a car engine instead of AC Delco. (GM Brand).... on their Chevy, which suffered form an engine manfunction. Moss-Magnuson act soon cleared up all that mess pretty quick, and burnt the big three a new one as well as lots of other companies that tried to make a person buy strictly their products whent ere was other products of equal or greater integrioty out there including home built stuff........Better look up exactly what MOss MAgnuson covers. It was also a major player by 5 fokls that I know of that were going to take JBJ NAno cube company to court when JBJ refused warranta on their cracked 24 gal cubes because they did not have them on a over priced JBJ 24 gal nano cube stand....They lost more than what the 5 folks were lookig to get replaced. My LFS will not carry Oceanic or AGA stands. Never did never will. He has all his stands made locally by a fellow that is a retired carpenter as well as a local cabinet shop......better stands overall and better materials and a much lower price as well.

the stand should be stable if you have a small tank and use good wood and also have some level of carpentry skill
