Anyone ever had diverticulum of the cecum?

It's an illness not at dish at Olive Garden

anyway I have been sick for over a month now and in the hospital once already and after two CT scans... if you have ever had one of these you know it is a pain in the rear, all pun intended. So anyway they have finally figured out that I have diverticulum of the cecum, if you are wondering what the heck that is, in a nutshell I have a diverticulum on my cecum that has been there since birth and it is now causing my problems...
let's turn to Wikipedia:
Diverticulum= (plural: diverticula) is medical term for an outpouching of a hollow (or a fluid filled) structure in the body. Its use implies that the structure is not normally present, although embryologically, some normal structures begin development as a diverticulum arising off of another structure (for example, the lungs begin as a diverticulum forming off of the ventral foregut).
Ceum= (from the Latin caecus meaning blind) is a pouch connected to the ascending colon of the large intestine and the ileum. It is separated from the ileum by the ileocecal valve (ICV) or Bauhin's valve, and is considered to be the beginning of the large intestine.
So on Sept 6th I go in to have this thing removed and they are going to take my appendix as well. So I was just wondering if anyway has ever had this and can tell me what to expect.

not laughing at you, but that thats hysterical.
All kidding aside, my Aunt had diverticultious (sp) and ended up with surgery. Not sure if its the same thing, but she was sick on and off for a few years and no one diagnoised her until she went to a Gastro Doc. Once she had the surgery and recovered she was good as new.
Good luck and I hope it takes care of your problem. :happyfish

there, Suzi. Make sure you stock your house with lots of comfy ergonomic pillows for your recovery weeks, sitting (or any motion requiring you to bend in the middle) is going to be an adventure for a while. Do you know if they are going to do the surgery laperscopically, or are they going to make an incision in your abdomen?
As for eating whatever you want; my suggestion is to eat more healthfully than usual. You need to have your body in absolute PEAK HEALTH before you undergo an operation; your recovery will be much easier that way.
These are just my suggestions, of course. I've never had experience with a PERSON having abdominal surgeries, but we perform enterotamies and colonectamies on cats and dogs all the time. The healthier they are before the procedures, the better it is for them in the long run. Especially since it's most likely that you're not going to be interested in or even allowed to eat for a while after.
I wish you the best of luck - and a speedy recovery!

I asked about doing it laperscopically but my doc only does it that way if it is going to be a big scar and my should only to 2 inchs so he is going to make an incision. Don't worry I was only joking about the eating bad part, I ate some apples and yogurt today
I love my fruit, it's the whole veggie thing I don't like as much :joy:
I have warned my boyfriend that he is on litter box duty for awhile since i won't be able to bend over... we shall see how that turns out, I have 5 kitties and 3 litter boxes :scared:

my Aunt has about a 3 1/2 inch incision from her ahhhh hem...to almost her navel.......not too bad since they removed a few inches of her intestine. The last thing she said to them was " tummy tuck......boob job". Well, she thinks the tummy was better off.

My Fiance Just Had A Similiar Surgery Done On July 31st. She Has Crohns Disease And Her Illium Was Extremely Enflamed. Drs Went In With A Camera And Took Out 6-9 Inches Of Her Intestine And Her Appendix.
Recovery Time For Her Is About 4 Weeks, She Is Still Recovering Slightly. For You Since It Is Not Done Laproscopically, Your Recovery Time May Be Greater Since They May Have To Make A Bigger Incision. Her Scar Is About 3 Inches, And Shes Got 2 Little Camera Holes.
Before The Surgery You Are Gonna Have To Prep. do Not
Leave Your Hause Because You Are Going To Be In The Bathroom All Day, And You Cant Eat For 24 Hrs Before The Surgery.
After The Surgery, You Are Not Going To Get Anything But An Iv For About 2 Days, Them Clear Liquids For About 2 Days Then Finally Solids Before You Leave. They Are Not Going To Let You Leave The Hospital Until You Are Up And Moving On Your Own, And You Make A Bowel Movement.
You Are Not Going To Be Able To Move For 2 Days After The Surgery, B/c Essentially They Are Cutting Open Your Abdominal Wall And You Use Your Abs For Everything Wether You Know It Or Not. Throughout Your Stay At The Hospital The Nurses Will Help You Move Around And Get You Up And Moving To Expedite Your Recovery. Once You Are Up And Moving, You Will Not Be Able To Stand Up Straight Or Lay Down Flat For About 2 Weeks Due To The Tightness Of Your Belly. It May Be Longer.
Food After The Surgery Is Going To Be Limited To A Lot Of Soft Stuff Until You Are Healed. Pretty Much If It Hurts...dont Eat It.
I Hope Everything Goes Well For You, Good Luck And I Hope You Get Lots Of Good Pain

I was told I had a slight case of diverticulitus awhile back, (not sure if its simiilar to your diagnoses), but i was having some lower tummy pain so went for a colonoscomy since my dad died of colon rectual cancer, I should have that test done every 4 yrs anyway (How did I get into this topic anyhow???) Anyhow, the test came back fine except for some diverticulitus, I was told to change my diet and it did help, eat lots of fruits and salads now, pain is pretty much gone completely now. Good luck to you
