i seen one at this lfs by me last night..... WOW one of the coolest things i have ever seen.... im totatlly going to buy one... it wasnt that bad either... only 60 bucks..... the head on it was maybe the size of a golf ball max!
my question is....
what is the tank size for octopuses???
i know it has to be the only thing in the tank because it will eat everything else.
next question....what do these things eat???
do they live long???
are they hard to take care of???

Please don't buy one until you've set up a tank specifically designed for its needs. NOT an impulse purchase! Most are not suitable to go in tanks with other things all in all. They are known escape artists - at least the bigger one's, and you need to take this into account. BTW, it is $60 for an animal that is actually short lived...you may get something like a year out of it. There are several recent threads on them so a search would be useful!

oh no if i do get one... it wont be for a while... and it will have a new tank all to itself... i know it is a very harsh carnivore.
so trust me... i defintially do my homework before buying animals like that!

We looked into getting one before we set up our FOWLR. You need a locking lid on your aquarium. If their beak can fit through an opening the octo is going through it. I read stories of them getting out of their tank, crawling into another, eating all of the fish, and going back to their own tank. Many people suggest afixing your rocks because of their strength. They also need to be "entertained". Many of the articles I read suggested putting food "locked" in different containers to stimulate their minds. They are extremely intelligent and can figure out many challenges. They are also expense to feed from what I could tell. Most of the ones sold in lfs only have a lifespan of 1 to 1 1/2 years. In the end, we decided against it-mainly because of their rep for being escape artists. They remind me alot of parrots. I had a cherry head conure that could escape out of any cage in the world. Very dangerous when you have dogs or cats.
