Anyone ever tried to connect 2 tanks?

I've always wanted to try this, but not really sure how to go about it. I want to find some clear pvc pipe, or even a clear glass tube that could connect 2 tanks so the fish could swim between the 2. I was planning on tring it out on 2 10g tanks just to see if it would work because I am not really sure. Any one else attempted this?

The tanks themselves do NOT need to be level,because the water in this tube is actually a syphon. This syphon will keep the water at the same level in both tanks at all times. If you were to add a gallon to one of these "linked"tanks the tube would even this out.That is one half a gallon would go into the other tank.The same would happen if you were to take a gallon out of one tank.The level would remain even till this syphon was broke.

But do teh fish swim through the tube? That is my main question, I want the tanks to be connected so the fish can swim from tank to tank, That is also why when I do find the right stuff to use I am going to try it on 10 g aquariums so I wont lose anything important.
