Anyone ever use ammovec?

Hello everyone,
I am very new to this hobby(one week old) and decided to go with a saltwater aquarium. Things were going along fine until yesterday when I lost two damsels in one day. My pH read 8.4, nitrite .1 mg/l, and ammonia .08 mg/l. Anyway, I went to the lfs and the guy told me that I needed to use ammovec to stablize my ammonium, nitrite, and nitrates. Has anyone ever used this in their tank and what was your outcome results?

Your water levals sound OK to me for a one week old tank. I think you put the fish in to soon. Try it now,as one week is the usual time to add a couple. I would add some live rock at this time also. I don't think you need to add anything to stablize the ammonia.Just wait and let the tank cycle. How big is your tank????What do you have for a filter??? Any other info will be helpful.....STEVE

My tank is 44 gal and I am using a 304 Fluval canister. I also have 4 damsels left in the tank. I was told that I could put the fish in the tank as soon as the water started to clear. The guy at the lfs said this would start my cycle. Maybe I was to anxious to get started but I don't want to lose anymore fish. Also, a guy at another fish store said that I would need a protein skimmer for a fish only tank. What is your input?

Sounds like a killer setup. You will need a skimmer. But if you have to,it can wait a week or so,till the cycle really gets going. I would definatly add live rock, about 10lbs to start.....STEVE

From what I understood from a book or lfs is that I would need some VHO lighting for the live rock. Is that right? If so, I just have a standard florescent NO light. If standard florescent light works on liverock then I would definitely get some. Thanks for any info you can give. I greatly appreciate it.

Standard(NO,normal output)will work, but you should get some high intensity bulbs. I suggest you see about getting CORALIFE 20,000K bulbs.Thats what I use in my 40gal tank, and till I turned it into a hospital tank, The rock was doing real good....STEVE
