My Husband and I were looking for interesting ways to get fit together and we found an awesome fencing school near us. Last night we sat in on a class and we are totaly enamored of the sport. Tonight is our first class - anyone here fence?

Back in College I got into it but the price of rapiers and equip will make you think SW if cheap. A single spot or stain on a piece of equip and most throw it away. The sport prides itself on stance and presentation along with sportmanship. Very enjoyable but it also attracts the elitists.
If getting into it for first time, stick with lighter longer foils. It considerably slows down the play making it more enjoyable starting out.
Most all the newer equp is electric but I am sure your instructor will direct you to what suits your needs. Do not buy used unless you know what your looking at. The foils and even ligher rapiers DO wear out.

I fenced on/off again (got tired of getting home at 9 oclock after school to fence). It is fun. I kinda wish I was still in it, kinda don't. Maybe after college I'll get back into it. Basketball kinda ruined it.

I have fenced... barbed wire, to be exact.

My dad fenced for years, and he has taught me a few things. I love swords and sword fighting. We just got our US Civil War Replica Sword.

There is actually an organization called ARMA - The Association for Rennaisance Martial Arts that teaches real medieval style swordfighting.

wow, u guys, that was the most intense excersise I have EVER encountered. At one point I looked at my Husband and said "Drew, it is RAINING inside of my clothes." LoL.
Who knew walking up and down in a straight line would make you sweat like a racehorse. LoL.
The school is amazing, it's one of largest schools on the east coast and every teacher is a world champion. They are all amazingly so patient and encouraging. I was VERY suprised at how much fun it was - I am seriously dislexic and have trouble w/ footwork, but I picked this up really quickly. It was just AWESOME.
And ReefforBrains, thanx for the heads-up. We won't need to buy anything any time soon, the school supplies ALL equipment and apparel; they are huge so they have mutlpile items in every size imagineable. If we end up really getting into it, we'll look into buying our own stuff, but that's a looooooong way off and hopefully by then we'll know what we're looking at.

Wow. I really would enjoy it better if the school I went to was bigger and nicer. It was just a small gym. It would be cool to go to one kinda like that one on the Bond film Die Another Day.LOL

Those cheap replicas that are out there are all complete garbage. If you are interested in some MUCH better quality swords check out Museum Replicas. Even these are fairly inexpensive knockoffs, but they are still much, much better than the stainless steel garbage that is out there.
(Yes, I am a collector)
I have 2 swords from Museum Replicas, a handmade hand and a half sword from a place called Lundegaard Armories in Upstate NY and a handmade Celtic leaf blade from a guy named Little Jon, down in Virginia
