Does/has anyone ever kept a full size hawkfish with a cleaner shrimp for a long time? If so what kind? I love the way hawks act and want one but fear for my cleaner shrimp. I've been told the a geometric pygmy, pixy, or lyretail hawk would work. So far the only hawk listed 100% reefsafe on all the sites i've looked is the lyretail, anyone got one?

I had a medium-sized longnose with 3 peppermint shrimp and he never bothered them. Sadly to say, I lost him because when I left a friend to look after my tanks, he never fed the tank mysis (the hawks favorite food), only flake.. which he ate very little of. Even when the poor guy was starving he never touched the shrimp.

I have a Fame hawlkf fish with two pepermint shrimp, a pistle shrimp, and some skunk cleaner shrimp. I have had it that way for 8 months and they are doing fine, but be carful with very small shrimp.

I'm having the same questions. Good post.
I've got 6 peppermints that are pretty small still and I want a Flame hawk. I have a fear it'll eat them right up though.

mine is in with a cleaner shrimp but my hawk is much smaller than it. i think if u keep a smaller hawk you will be ok but once the hawk gets to the same size or bigger than the shrimp he will have a good dinner one night

Thanks for all your replies. I'm leaning toward either a lyretail or a geometric because i've never heard of either eating a shrimp. If anyone has either of these please share your experiences.

In the overall scheme of things, shrimp are pretty low on the food chain in the ocean. I don't think there is any Hawkfish that you would be 100% guaranteed to be safe with.
I've kept Red Spotted and Falco both with shrimp, but I couldn't guarantee you or I could do it successfully again.
