Anyone here making their own currency?

Was reading this article on MSN. So how do these bercshares work? Looks like someone prints this currency, then 'sells' it to start getting it distributed within the community. So I assume a 'dollar' of this currency is cheaper than a US Dollar. So how do businesses who accept this currency make a profit? Who do they turn it into to get their 'cash' back in US dollars?

I've seen this done at college with "mascot bucks" where they have a credit card style card that local businesses accept. Usually a pretty good ripoff.
