well, IMO, you should be fine if you have good enough circulation, what else are you using for filtration and water movement(particularly gph), one thing, when you remove it, you will likely need ot do more water changes, depending on how much you are already doing

OMG, i just noticed you got a refugium too, that only increases your odds of success, wiht that system

I don't have much experience with refugiums, so I can't really comment on your system. I can say that I have been skimmerless from the start (almost 2 years ago), and have had no problems. Heck, I'm even running CC with a UGF... big no-nos by most experts, but no problems as yet (just gotta be careful not to overfeed).

I don't have a skimmer and compensate by doing more water changes at least 1 every week.and feed every other day.How do you gravity feed a refugium and return the water back to the tank. How do you keep the water from overflowing if power runs out and you cant return the water back to the tank.

Jacksonpt,
Are you crazy, you know that CC and UG are no good, they won't work. I have been running the same thing for about 10+ years, but I have a cheap skimmer. I have looked at you site several times, but I have yet to see a full tank shot! When are you going to put one up, I would like to see it.
What do you think of the 20,000K bulbs, I heard that 10,000K were better, so I run 2 of them. I have thought about 20,000K Coralife bulbs, but would like some feedback first if you do not mind. You should also know that 40 watt bulbs are also not recommended, I have 3 of them myself. I guess if it's not broke, then don't fix it...

There was a poll on this last week, and about 30% or so run skimmerless. I don't remember the exact numbers.

That's what everyone has said, but I am yet to see any problems. All my levels are consistant, and good.

I had one up for a while, but had gotten pretty outdated. I tood a bunch of pics yesterday, including some full tank shots -- I just haven't had a chance to pull them off my cam and get them posted yet. I'll let you know when I do... they should be up by the end of the week.

The 20k Coralifes (that's what I run) are ok. Their not bad for easy stock, but if you have anything with any kind of moderate to high light requirements, stay away from them. It's clear that my hammer coral prefered the 10k bulbs over the 20k. I have two 250w 7500 MH bulbs that I'm building a canopy for. I'll be running them with two 40 NO actinics, so it'll be interesting to see how the corals like that setup.

I run skimmerless on my 55 gal reef. My bioload is not heavy and I have a Fluval 404 for mechanical and a biological filter. True I have to have the spray bar on my Fluval to get more surface agitaion and gas exchange but other than that I have had no problems.

a gravity fed ref. should be placed higher than the tank, any you put an overflo in(cut trhu the glass, tehn put a line back to the tank), so the water can flow back in naturally, and to eliminate overflowing anything, you put your over flow near the surface of the water line you intend to keep(or vice versa), so if the power goes out, teh ref., will only drain down to the overflow, tehn stop, all you do then is pump the water up to your refugium
