Anyone know a lot about hand guns?

I got an offer for a Ruger 9mm with a case, two clips, holster and box of ammo for $300. It has never been fired. Are Rugers any good? Also, does the price sound right? I have a few rifles and shotguns but how never purchased a pistol though my father in law gave me a .38 many years ago. Any advice would be welcomed...thanks!

I dont know a whole heck of a lot, but if I remember correctly...I checked out handguns before (boyfriend wants one, thought about getting one for X-mas, but he wants the $900 one - he can get it himself)
the Ruger handguns were around $500-600, and that is just the gun, nothing with it. I do believe Rugers are pretty decent, not the best, but not garbage.

Yeah, I think $300 may be good for me since it will be a "starter" gun. I've been going to the range with a friend and I am tired of reloading my 38. My friend has a Sig Sauer (spelling?) and he paid quite a bit more for his.

A Ruger 9mm will cost between $300-$400 depending on the model they all come with a single clip. addtional clips run around $30. holsters vary in price and can be anywhere from $20-$100. 9mm ammo is pretty cheap, but i would definitly pick it up for $300. its a good starter pistol at a nice costs and fun to shoot. i would shoot it before you buy it to make sure it's the right gun for you

what do you want to use it for? 9mm ammo is cheap so it wouldn't be a bad gun for target practice. However if you ever wanted to use it for hunting or self defense you'd probably want something a bit a bit more power.

It's going to be for target practice and nothing else. I only go dove hunting now and I don't think I could use it for that. If I could, I would tkae that show on the road
Anyway, I think I will jump on it. I was concerned mailny about the brand name. Didn't know what sort of record Rutger carries. Always hear about Smith and Wesson, Sigs, Heckler and Koch, Glauch but not much on Ruger.

Ruger makes fine firearms. I am not a fan of their semi auto pistols though, but the price you can get it for is certainly good. The only reason I am not a fan of them is I do not like the feel of them, as compared to other brands.....its certainly just personal in that aspect and nothing to do with quality issues. Their revolvers and rifles are especially hard to beat dollar for dollar. And BTW the Ruger KP89 (9 mm model) wa runner up years ago when the military wa looking to replace the old standby M1911 45 cal pistol. Rugers 9mm finished 2nd in a heavy bout of testing against most all major manuf of pistols, such as colt, S & W, Glock etc.
Its an aluminum frame, so keep it clean and lubed to prevent premature wear, but most all semi auto today are alum anyhow, so its not any better or worse in that aspect.

Yes the military is/was using the ruger 9mm, but they are swaping back to the 1911. The ruger 9mm can be dismantled by the enemy in a one handed motion. The barrel release can be depressed and roll the other button on the oposite side, to dismantle it in a second. Just like the jackie chan movies. Other than that the Ruger 9mm is a good weapon. Taurus has release its new version of the 1911, which is just awesome. You can get it for about $550.

I went to a gun range during lunch and I did not personally like the feel of the Ruger. So I tried several other hand guns and I think I settled with a S&W 40 cal. I will be going back tomorrow night to test fire one. It costs more but the feel is important especially if I plan to do a lot of target shooting. Thanks.

My Husband says that price is great for a used model, so for a gun that's never been fired, it's excellent - especially with all the extras. Go for it! It's a good gun, too; my uncle-in-law is in private security and he uses Rugers.

Rugers are decent pistols, I used to own a Ruger P85 9mm. However 9mm would not be my first choice for a pistol. 45ACP or 357 Magnum. Have had some seriously accurate Ruger rifles also. Sig Sauer would be my choice for best automatic pistol. Some like Desert Eagle, but I find them too bulky and slow to handle.

Ruger was never issued to military forces a sa sidearm. It underwent tests for consideration on being adopted by the military and it failed to beat Beretta. I do not know whewre your getting info on them gong backwards to the 1911 45 cal but I bet its wrong in every way. There is just too many other higher end more capacity sidearms out there than the old out of date 1911. The 1911 is still a great handgun but its met its day in all reality to other high tech weapons in todays world, and the military is not re-adopting it nor the Ruger. Beretta still has a contract to fullfill with a ton of M-9 9mm. Virtually most of the 45 cal ammo has been turne dover to the director of civilian marksmanship for their use in target shooting the 1911. 9 mm is the standard cal used, by US Military as well as NATO forces.....not the 45.
The miolitary does use Sigs and other sidearms for special purposes and operations such as by the seals and delta force in covert ops, but they are not a standard issue sidearm. None have ever been issued a Ruger sidearm.

Ok since I like the feel of a S&W better than the Ruger, are S&W guns just as good. I think that may be a stupid question because I own several S&W guns but not a S&W hand gun ... well I am not sure who makes my 38...time to check.

Actually the military used Baretta's.
Rugers are GREAT guns though. Is it a P85? Worth $300

S&W is OK, very popular firearms, good customer support, but not my first choice. For autos Sig for both accuracy and reliability, Beretta for relability (my 92F sucked for accuracy, Mel Gibson was full of Sheet in Leathal weapon). Colt for revolvers then S&W. Some folks love S&Ws. The Python 357 revolver is very well made. Then again mine was made before 2002.
I reload my own ammo, accuracy and consistency can be improved and tailored to the individual firearm somewhat this way. If you really want to get competetive someday you will get into reloading inevetibly. Its much more precise then mass produced. "God made all men. Samuel Colt made all men equal"

Thanks Phix for your response. I think I will be going by feel for now and tomorrow what it feels like to fire. IMO, I don't think I could go wrong with a Ruger, SW, SS, HK, Beretta or whatever. NOW, I plan to be using it for awhile and a lot at the target range. That might make a difference. How long will it hold up. I think a S&W will hold up based on it's rep but what do I know.
Here's the funny thing, my dad and father in law have a lot of guns between them. They know what I am looking for and I know they own several guns like what I want but won't offer up. They never even use the guns! What's up with that! Collectors.....man they suck....guess that's what they say to me about my collections....
