r u going to care for it? Everything depends on what you plan to spend, what size tank, how old is ur sister, important stuff, do a search on FOTW: Seahorses, it's a brief err, starter guide thingy, i guess. is this ur first fish tank?

Do A LOT of reaserch before buyings anything. Seahorses need special care. Also, only get captive bred and not wild caught seahorses.

:happyfish Oh man are seahorses hard to keep alive! If I knew now what I knew then, I would have never tried them. First of all you need live brine for them, and they most of the time can't ever get them to eat. Also, if you get a pregnant male, then they tend to die after birth. In my opinion seahorses are like moorish idols as far as getting them acclimated. Good luck.

never had a seahorse but did read they are for species only tanks, so i dont think you can put other fish in with them.

:happyfish Ya, they need their own tank with no other fish to compete for food with, and need places to latch on, like rockwork, or seaweed, and low current, and live brine all the time, and still with all this they are a pain to keep alive. Good luck, they are pretty.

NOT brine! Mysis shrimp. Captive bred seahorses should be eating frozen mysis before you get them.

I am glad you are researching SHs before you attempt to do anything with them.
Depends on what species you buy. Pygmy and dwarf need a small tank, mysis shrimp with extra nutrition, covered intake.
Small horses should not have live rock or live sand due to the little critters that can sting them and kill them.
Larger SHs can not survive on mysis and need brine shrimp. The mysis are too small to satisfy a larger horses.
h. Erectus, h. Borbouri, and larger need tall tanks.
Don't let anyone at the lfs tell you, 'they eat live foods but you can train them in no time to switch'. If they are not already trained, they probably won't survive until they do.
They need almost perfect water perimeters. You can't slid or put them on hold.
Just read and research and remember that there are always 10 different anwers for every question. Good Luck. email me if you want: texaseahorses@yahoo.com or seahorsecorral@aol.com
Our tanks are on SH.org under the 35 gal.

mysis is what seahorses eat in the wild, it is the number one best thing for them. Live brine is to be used ONLY as a dietary need, since most seahorses will eat it but there nutirtional value sucks. If you research you can train them, it takes time but for nature value, get captive bred.

Hey, I tried to email you, but you have it disabled. I was wondering what happened to the other board? The one with Mtex Cindy, Seaham, you guys..... I was away for a while and it is gone. Any info you have would be helpful. Did everone end up here? I miss the gang.:help: :help:
Scott

Scott, Saltwaterfish.com has it disabled. Sorry for the confusion. Let's start a new thread and see if we can find them, ok?
Really brief though, saltwaterfish.com incorporated the marine board. I am hoping that the 'old' members will start signing up here so we can continue our devilish plans.
I don't want to take over this thread, so let's call new thread, "Trying to locate old board members". I'll put it in 'The Aquarium' it is for off topic subjects.
This is a really exciting board and I would love to see all our members over here.

i dont mind you guys taking over this thread i appriciate all of your help and have talked to my sister and talked her out of seahorses lol told her that she has a real horse and she should just get some inexpensive fish lol
again thank you

madysmom, Right after I started with my SHs, I had a confusing dream. There were beautiful horses running across a meadow but the back of them were like SHs. I worried a lot about them and am I doing this right or wrong. What if....
The main thing that happened was that I was very tired each morning.
One more thing, tell your sister no tangs in a 10g set up.

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure Mysis shrimp are freshwater. Sea Horses main food in the wild are various 'pods.

You are probably thinking of ghost shrimp or rainbow shrimp. Mysis are the natural food of many seahorses.

Ghost shrimp can be found in estuaries and i have been able to QT them into my tank so that the seahorses can hunt them down "weird belief of mine"
