Anyone know the advantages of a Refugium?

I was just wondering if anyone has used this style and what the advantages are compared to a simple trickle filter with protein skimmer. I keep hearing alot about it and am thinking about going this way with my new 75 gallon setup. Plus I was wondering if this is only used for reef tanks. I plan to have a mostly fish setup with only polyps and mushrooms.

a fuge filled with culpra will lower your nitrate and other nutriants that the nuisance algie use. it also is a safe spot for pods to grow as far as what setup I clicked on the pic and it is of your tank so I am not sure what setup you mean
