ponies and horses are pretty much the same i think.....
and i'm kinda gettin tired of threads like this. RESEARCH.
our tank is gonna need to set for months, your gonna need a nice big filter, if your gonna get a big breed of horse your gona need a tall tank. you need to research before oyu get horses.
you have to be bale to care for them, i have spent around 7-8 months now just researching and i still don't have horses. i know now i'mr eady for them, btu i spent this much time jus preparing, and you need to make sure you can care for them correctly.
go online and spend a month or two reading everything you can possibly find about keeping and caring for horses. your tank is gonna need to set for a few months anyway. seahorse.org is real nice.

My goodness, where does one start......

well, 1st...98% of LFS know absolutely nothing about the care and keeping of seahorses.
seahorses and ponies are very different.
*Captive Bred seahorses are trained to eat enriched frozen
mysis. Dwarf seahorses (ponies) need enriched live baby brine
shrimp.
*Horses have completely different tank requirements than the
Ponies. Horses need tanks that are tall enough to allow them to stretch out to full length while swimming. Ponies need a tank small enough that you can actually find them!!!

*Both are time consuming and require a lot of TLC.(which is well worth while to me
)
*Water quality has to be 98% perfect across the board to maintain maximum health for both.
What were the main differences you were asking about?

Well...what kind of reef tanks have you kept? In my reef tank I used tap water. I had 2 gonipora flower pots that grew like weeds, and multiple other odds and ends that earned me the "Black Sheep" of the SWF family award

As I'm sure you know every tank is different, every fish, every invert, etc.
My ponies are pretty tough little fish, I'd wager tougher than horses. You have to be tough to survive in the wild being the size of a dime! But there is a draw back...the water quality in the 10 gallon goes down real quick-regular water changes are a MUST! Making sure the ponies get enough to eat is another problem. I've been trying to design a little hollow feed ball, about the size of a golf ball, with tiny holes in it, that would contain the baby brine shrimp(bbs)longer and allow the ponies to attach and full their stomachs easier.

hi and welcome. first you would need to decide what breed of horses you want. There are several. there are a few that require colder water and a chiiller. most sub-tropicals should be kept in a tank at 76 to 78 degrees, to help keep them healthy. the higher the temp, the easier they can get sick.
kuda are a smaller species, and could be kept in a 29 gal. Erectis are a larger horse, and a good size tank for them is a 37 gal cube, which is tall.
you need good filteration, but not a lot of flow.
thats all i can think of now.

Oh, and don't forget the extra cycle time to make sure that the supplemental pods have time to procreate and, well, procreate some more. The glass in my 37 gal sh tank is always covered with pods.
I've also decided that feeding my little brood from a plastic dish has worked out wonderfully. They get their fill, and I can take out excess mysis at the end of the day, which saves my water quality.
The lighting in a sh tank can be pretty run of the mill. I keep pc's on mine because I do like to keep some nice safe softies in with my horses...yeah, mine are horses, not ponies like Ryk's.
Hmmmmm, what else...**tapping chin with finger**...OH!! As stated previously, when you've done your research and feel that your tank is ready (first and foremost!!), please, PLEASE be sure to purchase captive bred and NOT wild caught.
Another thing to consider, even with horses is the extra added dedication they require. They need to be fed 2 x/day...every day, no skipping. Water changes in my 37gal have been about a 3-4gal change every 5 days or so.
Hope this helps you out.

2-3 day vacatiuon I wouldn't worry about if you have a good pod population. They will hunt for themselves during that time. I left my horses for a weekend trip numerous occasions. However anything longer than that and you will need a sitter.

Every day, no skipping? I'm going to have to find that article from yesterday... It was recommended that the horses have a "fast day" once a week... I forget why, though
Lemme see if I can dredge it up...

Can't find the exact article, so more searching if needed, but I did find a reason for not feeing them every day: If you feed solely PE Mysis, as a sole diet PEM is too high in fat. Some recommend a fast day, if not once a week, then once every couple of weeks to help keep the fat consumption in check, while others say to feed something else instead, such as enriched brine shrimp... To each his own.
Whew, glad I was able to find that!
