Anyone use points.com?

Is it really free? Other than I'm sure bad conversion rates, what is the catch, if any?
I have 700,000+ Marriott points and tons of AMEX points from nonstop
business travel. However when it comes to flights I always use the most
convenient airline time available, without regard to company. So I have
12,000 miles on a bunch of airlines and 100k+ on a bunch of airlines. I
need a way to view them all and swap all my low-mileage airlines to get something.
Add to that the fact that I'm losing 12,500 American miles in about a
month unless I use them. And I noticed I can get $50-75 retail gift
certificates from points.com for that amount of AA miles. Whereas the
AA website only allows me to buy some magazines.
Anyone have experience using points.com. I need to figure out if there's
a catch, or if it really is a free way to organize/redeem miles more
efficiently.
