There are few makes of this HOB fuge out there right now and
Aquafuge is considered the best, but is pricey.
Anyways, I too installed a HOB fuge on my sump and love the results so far.
The sand can be any live sand or your play sand if you rather, about 3 to 4 inches deep.
I like the cheato aka brillo pad algae for my plant with lots of live rock
rubble. That's about it. As for any real maintenence on the fuge, it
doesn't really require much.
I only wipe it down to control the salt creep, it does the rest.
I did add a bottle of pods also to my fuge, and now I have pods, lots of
em.
My algae in my tank has been reduced considerably, and where there were
no pods, now I am in total pod heaven.
I still have algae in my tank mind you, but the grazers need to eat also
so they remain happy.
My tank looks better than ever, and I went with a small refuge, it really
does the trick.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
