while speaking to a lfs today, the guy told me aquariums are only rated to last 18 years. He said if you get that before leaking you should considor yourself lucky. I have a 55 gallon that has got to be 20-25 years old since mfg. Its been empty for at least half of that though. I never heard such a thing, was this guy just trying to sell me a new tank??

unless your glass is cracked then all you need to do is use silicone to seal it every 10 years or so...

do you have to scrape any of the old out or do you just seal over it? Can you use any from home depot?

you got to remove the old silicone, and no you cant use the silicone from homedepo.. you have to use aquarium silicon.. you can get them at ur LFS..

you can get 55 gallon tanks for 88 bucks at pet supermarket......

I have heard the same thing about the rating. But, I have heard of them lasting longer. I second everyone's info about the re-siliconing.
I've heard of tanks lasting a lot shorter too.
