Aquarium Fish Magazine Ending

Got a postcard in the mail today saying that aquarium fish magazine is going under and that effective November all current subscribers will be automatically switched over to Dog Fancy magazine. As you can imagine I was and am extremely pissed about this. I ended up calling the company which a recording picks up asking for your subscriber #. They then inform you about the switch to dog fancy and then give you an option for a refund. Of course I went for the refund which you will receive in 3-4 weeks. Just wanted to bring this to the attention of other subscribers that there is a way out of the magazine they switch you too. R.I.P. Aquarium International.

Any other evidence to substantiate your claim?
I see it on their facebook...
They have been bought and sold many times over the years. I'm sure someone else will buy them out and the magazine will continue.

If you are subscribed you should get your postcard any day now.
or
http://www.animalnetwork.com/ceased-publication.aspx
or
(800) 833-7000
All that should be proof enough.
I wouldn't make it up. There my favorite and in my opinion the best aquarium magazine.

Awwwww I actually really liked them too. I cut my subscription short a couple of months ago due to financial concerns so I wouldn't know. I also subscribe to Dog Fancy anyways.
Seth- I thought you were never on facebook? Lol

With as much hobby related material on the internet, for free, I'm not too surprised that a fish publication hit the dust. More proof, as well, that this hobby is taking a hit due to the economy. So many folks have left the hobby, or are scaling down.

+1
especially the internet.
I started back in the mid '70's and my favorite mag was the freshwater and marine aquariums which started back in '78 or '79.
It was a wealth of informations and got me started on the planted type aquariums.
But sadily it shut down a few years back.

I think it is all about shipping costs. Before free or cheap($9.99) shipping, I never considered saltwater aquaria. Every LFS and major chain would charge like $50 for a clown fish and the warranties before internet sales were crap at LFS. Suddenly, about 2002, I discovered SWF and a couple other places where I could get what was $500-$1000 in fish and coral from the LFS delivered to my door for like $100. I was in heaven. Suddenly, screwing up a SW tank meant losing $100 in livestock instead of $500-$1000. Secondly, I could get $50 in livestock and it was several great fish and free or $10 shipping, so adding fish and coral became cheap and easy. Now the price of all livestock (except for the occasional sale) has doubled and tripled and more, and in order to get free or cheap shipping requires a much greater cash outlay. Suddenly, what was a $50 total became a $150-$200 total. So I can't just look at SWF or any old web site and see a couple fish or coral and think, "Yeah, I got $50 bucks I can blow on that fish(or coral)". Now I have to wait for 2 or 3 months and carefully plan what I can afford and how much shipping will whack me and I just say, "Screw it!" It's actually making the overpriced LFS look like a much better value proposition for the impulse buying I used to do online. I don't blame SWF or any other online retailer, shipping has gone way up on both ends. But the days of "eye it, buy it" online are over for me until prices for livestock and shipping come WAAAAAAYYYYYY down. But that is why I think the whole industry is falling like a rock. The internet was the best way to shop and now it's just too dang high and people like me won't jump into SW aquariums because it is too expensive to just buy on impulse like it was.

Same with shipping paintings and antiques like we have to in our business.
Lol, $70 for shipping a $50 painting. I don't think so! (Or the buyers don't think so, and after all, that's all that matters).

Yes, I think that's a major problem and downfall of the industry as well. Besides being strapped for cash and not having money for those impulse buys like I used to, I also have to save up for a while and carefully plan, even if I go to the live fish store or an online fish/coral retail store. Things have really been overpriced for a while now. The only good deals I can find is for frags from other hobbyists that don't want a profit - just to share their passion.
I'm not surprised that the magazine is going out of business either. But, like I said, someone else might think highly of it and continue it's operation. But, I doubt it. The problem is that there are sooo many other free magazines out there - and even online retail stores send free monthly product catalogs with articles written in them. There's also a free coral magazine that I get on my iPhone. If I want any detailed information about anything, all I have to do is go online and look ANYWHERE else besides wikipedia. LOL.
Right now, believe it or not, a lot of actual physical books are easy to find online and order for pennies on the dollar. I like to find oddball aquarium related books on abebooks and order them when I have some extra cash.
To be honest, where I think the industry will go is just from hobbyist to hobbyist. There are so many more classifieds sections over the internet for trading and selling from hobbyist to hobbyist than ever before. I have plenty of friends right now that I can get free frags from, and even more that I can buy some local frags from. If you just invest a little time and research you will find many great deals out there - and you may even join a local reef club or two in the process.

I'm not talking about dry goods. I'm talking about live goods. There will always be a shiny new piece of equipment in this hobby and plenty of sellers out there to satisfy those needs.
