Aquarium placement question

I'm getting ready to set up my 38 gallon tank and I have a concern on where i'm placing the tank. The tank will be in our basement, the main viewing room for the family and guest. As with most basements, its kinda chilly in there in the summer as the AC vent is down there. My idea of where I want the tank is about 2 feet away from the vent. The vent is on the ceiling and blows air down towards the ground (trying to paint a picture in your minds here) and is adjustable as to where I want the air to go. But in the winter time the heat that comes out of that vent almost makes the basement unbearable until we shut it. Will the fluxuation of temps. cause any problems with my tank ?? Temps in the tank ?? I know I can always shoot the air the other way, but if that won't help I don't want to set it up in that spot.
My second question is I want a black background on my tank. I've been reading about how to paint it, either spray or can paint. In your opions, would it be easier to get some black constrution paper and use that instead ?? What have you guys done with the back of your tanks ??
Thanks for any opinions !!

what kind of lights are you planning on having, halides will counter any negative affect the ac would have..... as long as you run 2 heaters in the tank I think you'll be fine... the real problem will be keeping it cool in the winter if the basement is hot

Well I don't think the heat will be that much of a problem. I can always re-direct the air away from the tank. The lights that I just purchased were Coralife T5 Dual lamp fixture. Came with a 10k lamp and a actinic lamp. LFS said it was a pretty nice light for what i'm trying to do.

just be sure to use 2 heaters, both rated for at least 30 gallons preferably 40 gallons and you shouold be fine
the actual temperature isn't as important as holding it consistantly at the same temp or at least within a few degrees, by using both heaters on opposite ends of the tank, it will help ensure that they can maintain the temperature, make sure that whereever you place the heaters there is adequate flow
