Cycling with Damsels is a very OLD OUTDATED and CRUEL method to cycle the tank. We use LR and raw shrimp now. The effects o the cycle will cause SEVERE gill damage to the damsels. Tuff they are, but why be cruel. If they live through the cycle they will not be fully healthy. In my opinion you need to take th damsels out and back to the LFS.
TIP: If you are as impatient as you say you are, Don't do this hobby! IMO you need to stop. Read and ask before you do anything else.
Of course the local fish store will tell you to cycle with damsels because when they die, YOU WILL BUY MORE!

I agree. To cycle a tank with fish is cruel.
You should just cycle that tank with live rock and add the fish after the cycle.

This hobby requires lots of patience. It could take up to 4-6 weeks just to cycle the tank.
And yes, I agree with not cycling the tank with live fish. You can just drop in a raw dead shrimp like you get from the grocery store.

WHY ASK FOR OPINIONS IF YOU CANT TAKE THE REALITY???? and no not fish police, but isnt the point to maintain a healthy environment? and keep fish alive? how would you feel if someone put you in a home that had just been pest bombed because you could speed up the cycle of getting rid of the gas meanwhile your lungs deteriorate from the chemicals? you may survive but will never be the same. dont be a punk! this is for information no one was flaming you here.

Come on guys, don't give him too much crap. He's obviously new to this hobby, we've all been there. But he needs to listen to what people has to say if he wants to learn. Some folks in here can be really rude and mean. They did something like this to me when I first got started. Start to stuff crap down my throat. It's better to just give him advice and if he wants to listen, he'll learn, if he don't, it's his own loss....

I think post #6 pretty much done him in. An apology would be nice from him to ALL of us. And then if he wants help, just ask, listen, ask, listen, don't be a smart ass about it! We all started out yes! If you took advice and stuck it back in someones face then ya, you probably got flamed as a newb too. I'm just saying we are here to help. if you don't understand, ask! We will explain it. I don't know everything and far from being experienced, but I do have a gift from GOD named "COMMON SENSE"!

I'm new to the hobby and i'm learning more and more everyday esp. from the people on here. I agree with some posters on here and for the guy that started this thread don't do the hobby if you can't take answers that you don't agree with. All these people know what they're doing and care about fish and the hobby. I was inpatient when i first started and i regrete it big time. In the long run research and patience will pay off. The way you respond i doubt you'll listen to what anyone has to say on here and just go on your own anyways. have fun
i cycled my tank with damsels because i didn't know better and one of my LFS said it was what i was suppose to do. Well 2 of them died within two weeks of having my tank.

Yea most of us are busy folks who take time to read through questions and answer with what we know. So you should really listen to what people have to say in here in a calm manner. I personally work 6 days a week, about 12-13 hr shift daily. Let's all just get along...

Hehe.
Anyway, good luck Swatcop109. I hope you stick it out and read around here. You'll learn a ton.
None of us were born with the innate ability to have a successful salt water aquarium. It takes time, knowledge and a little bit of luck.
Be respectful to the folks around here that have successful tanks. Some of the posters here have far outstripped what the pet stores know.
Finally, damsels are cheap, but they are just as much of a pet as that rare $1000 fish you might one day buy. You have a responsibility to take care of them. Do a search around here for "cycling". You'll learn the easiest, cheapest, and most humane way to set up a tank.
