how do I break the siphon if the power fails or some other type of freak accident so I don't get a flood? thanks in advance

Pretty much what happens is the display tank drains just enough to cut off the overflow (which ever type you have, hang-on or built-in). The extra water just collects in the sump. That's why most sumps aren't completely used up. When the power cuts back on, the pump refills the tank and the cycle continues.

drill a hole in the return pipe a little bit higher than he water level

check valves just every once in a while test them because i have heard stories of peoples check valves getting crude stuck to it and not closing all the way to stop the water from your display tank i have never had that problem and i check mine like every time i clean my tank Thats my 2 cents have a great day
