I've always thought they were a hardy tang. I'm buying one for my 90 gallon tank in the next week or so :) Can't wait, I love them, they are so cool. A little expensive for a tang but their juvenile colors are simply amazing!

I would say more so than say a naso tang but less than a powder blue - I just got one and I can't think of a better fish for a reef tank - just munches away on algae all day! Very pretty, great personality, and non-aggressive.

I am new to salt tanks, but as far as I have read (for all that is worth) tangs are no more likely to get ich than any other fish. It is simply that their demands are rarely met and any sickness is a result of that. I too am new (tank 7 months old) but this is what I have read.

Tangs, by nature of their thin skin, are more prone to contract Ich then most species. Some Tangs, i.e..blue hippo, are more prone within the Tang group.

dockery: If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for him? and how big was he?

He is about 4" maybe a little less. He was 99.99 but I got him on sale for 79.99. I watched him at the LFS for about three weeks, I got him home and he would not eat, just pick at the live rock which freaked me out. It took about a week and he started to come around. Now he is pretty much always out in the front of the tank. Very cool

Now he eats everything. From brine to flake to alge sheets, to pellets. Anything you put into the tank.

chevron tangs are less prone to ich than others such as the pb, hippo or yellow. they do cost a bit more but are much hardier IMO. weve had one in the shop now for about 4 weeks and he is doing amazing. he eats everything and has spectacular coloration. unfortunately they loose their cool juve color as they get older and become more olive green, but still a very peaceful, hardy fish!
good luck
