It was Operation Mogul. The Air Force was sending up balloons into the upper atmosphere to spy on Russia. The UFO story was the cover story originally released to keep the commies from finding out. All the supposed experts, including the soldiers who came out saying they knew/saw it was a UFO, were not part of Mogul. They were unknowing dupes in the cover up. All those who were part of Mogul have come out and said the same thing-the UFO crash was a cover story. They just didn't know so many people would believe it. Funny, I saw a Discovery program where they interviewed Russian intelligence officers who said they weren't fooled and knew it was a spy program from the start. Apparently we are the only ones not getting the memo.

Good info on that. I just figured that's where they came up with the stealth bomber coatings and what not. Tested new and secret things. Leave it up to the gov't to fool it's own people ;)

Wikipedia has some good info on it as well. They tested the U-2 spy plane, SR-71 Blackbird prototypes and F-117 prototypes there. And everyone thought it was boring stuff like aliens, geeze.

I used to pass by the infamous Area 51 frequently when I drove a big truck. You can see it from Hwy 95 north of Las Vegas. Though you can see it from the highway, it still officially doesn't exist. Yep, all the new aircraft are tested there.

This is the "secret" base from hwy 95. It's from a keepers of odd knowledge website. If you have a weak telescope, you can see folks milling about and get front row views of new aircraft. I saw the B2 Spirit there on the taxiway before it's official release. All they try to do is keep the details of programs secret. There is no attempt to black out everything. Kinda hard to hide UFO's in the open isn't it?

Well, yeah. It's secret dontcha know? But, next time you're in Vegas, take a car 2 hours north. It's about 20 miles north of where the highway turns to 2 lanes from 4. You can pull off on the shoulder and see what Google blocks. No black helicopters come buzzing you (I had a semi parked there-you'd think that'd get their attention), no tanks, SUV's, Jeeps, white sedans, etc. They are only protective of the desert side, as there are areas with no fences. But try to get on Ft Huachuca here, where there's no fences. Most of the kooks from the east coast make it seem like a locked down, shoot to kill deal. It's just another base, that they choose not to acknowledge because of the high security. H@ll, they have buses that run from Vegas to the base 3 times a day.
