So, the next time I walk into Jack in the Box and buy a homeless dude lunch, the rollers can cuff and stuff me? The world is a very sick place.
Officer : "I'm sorry sir, that old man will have to starve to death to avoid the remote possibility that you are going out of your way to poison him."
The government just wants their piece of the pie. The $30 registration fee and the $15 per event is not going to prevent botulism! Our government has definitely outgrown it's little panties.

I can see both sides of this. Someone donates old food to the homeless, they get sick and some ACLU type sues the snot out of the city for not looking out for the homeless.

Kind of off subject but a friend of mine worked at SeaBoard Farms, a shipping facility for wholesale chicken. The first time I went to meet her for lunch, I gagged, the smell of bad meat was wafting through the office. It was a sucky place and turned me off of chicken for a while. Anyhow, they had two dumpsters out front that were the cause of the stench. Once a week, out of date or unacceptable chicken was picked up. The bad chicked was dipped in purple dye to deter the homeless people from trying to grab it. Even so, with the reeking smell and the purple dye, they were still grabbing it, eating it, getting sick and then showing up threatening to sue SeaBoard. The Health Department was contacted by the hospitals in cases of food poisoning, so they became involved. To pacify everyone they moved the dumpster to the front door so that they could make sure no one was stealing. It ended up being such a hassle, plus office employees started complaining of being sick from the stench and the entire operation was moved to another area.

What the story doesn't tell you is the other reason for this. This is done in a downtown district where there are lots of small business. These guys drive out and set up shop (sort of like those meals on wheels vans) and the homeless element (which wasn't in the area before) migrates down here to them...It is hindering and harming the businesses...people don't want to be hassled by a bunch of panhandlers when trying to go about their business in one of the busy sections of the city,,,

They homeless (as the are homeless) have started defacating in the street and so on....From a health code standpoint this is creating all kinds of problems...not just whether the food is safe, but it is affecting other businesses and the public...but the story wont tell you that. The police have asked these guys on numerous occasions to cease and decist....

But if you pony up a few bucks and pay the fees, you can give all you want. I don't think the city has the businesses in mind, but rather, the city's bottom line. I work in the same type of area. Lots of small businesses and a substantial homeless population.
PS...if anybody decides to try the homeless lifestle, do it in San Diego. The weather is AWESOME!
